Rough cost ranges in Houston
- A Houston fence company’s 2026 guide lists 6 ft cedar board-on-board privacy fence at $22–$35 per linear ft installed, pressure-treated pine at $18–$28, and cedar boards on steel posts at $28–$45. Its example 150 ft cedar backyard fence comes to $3,300–$5,250.[1]
- Angi’s Houston wood fence page (updated August 2026) shows a lower range of $8.50–$25.50 per linear ft, with an average project of $2,632.[2]
Gates, removing an old fence, 8 ft height and tight access all add to the price.

Do you need a permit in Houston?
Inside City of Houston limits, the Houston Permitting Center says fences of any material taller than 8 ft above grade need a permit, and fences built wholly or partly of masonry or concrete need one regardless of height.[3] The city’s residential One-Stop guide likewise lists fences up to 8 ft that are non-masonry and non-electrified as permit-exempt.[4] Suburbs and HOAs set their own rules, and most HOAs control fence height, style, stain color and which side faces out.
Pool fences and gates
If your fence is part of the barrier around a pool, it has to meet pool barrier rules, not just look good. City of Houston Health Department pool plan requirements say gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and a driveway or carport can’t form part of the pool enclosure.[5] Houston has also adopted the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code with local amendments.[6] Tell your fence company the fence is a pool barrier so they can confirm height, gate hardware and gaps for your jurisdiction. Removable mesh pool fences are another option for an extra layer of protection around the water.
Houston-specific tips
- Posts are the weak point. Wood posts often rot at the soil line in wet clay. Many Houston homeowners pay more for steel posts.[1]
- Wind. Ask how the fence is braced for Gulf storms, and how deep the post holes and concrete go.
- Property line and neighbors. Confirm the line from your survey before the old fence comes down, and talk to your neighbor about shared fences.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Wood or steel posts? How deep, and set in concrete?
- What grade of cedar or pine, and what fasteners (galvanized or stainless)?
- Is old fence removal and haul-off included?
- For a pool barrier: which gate hardware, and does it self-close and self-latch?
- Who handles the HOA application and any permit?
